2025 Indianapolis 500 odds, IndyCar picks: Best bets for the Indianapolis Motor Speedway from proven racing expert

CBS Sports motorsports writer Steven Taranto reveals his IndyCar picks to SportsLine for the 2025 Indianapolis 500 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Sunday

ByPublished: May 25, 2025 1:09PM UTC . 3 min read

Veteran driver Alex Palou may have three IndyCar Series championships, but he is still seeking to win his first Indianapolis 500. Palou has come close with four top-10 finishes at the storied race, including fifth last year as Josef Newgarden won his second consecutive Indianapolis 500 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Palou gets another shot at it on Sunday when he looks to make it five wins in six races this season. He is coming off a win at the 2025 Sonsio Grand Prix on May 10 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course.

Pato O'Ward is the +500 favorite, with Palou at +550, Scott Dixon at +650 and Robert Schwartzman at +800 in the latest 2025 Indianapolis 500 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway odds, from DraftKings Sportsbook. Kyle Larson will attempt "The Double" with the Indy 500 and Coca-Cola 600. Sunday's race is scheduled to start at 12:45 p.m. ET.

Before making any Indianapolis 500 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway picks, you NEED to see what CBS Sports NASCAR writer Steven Taranto has to say.

Taranto, who moonlights as a sim racer and has 20 career wins in iRacing, is the lead motorsports writer for CBSSports.com, and he chronicles stock car racing with the same thoroughness and passion that he's had since becoming a full-time race fan in 2001. He has an annual NASCAR media credential and also publishes a popular weekly NASCAR predictions column, famously calling Ross Chastain and Daniel Suarez's breakthrough wins in 2022. Taranto was red-hot for SportsLine in 2024 as he nailed 17 winners, including 16-1 longshot William Byron at the Daytona 500 and 14-1 longshot Chase Elliott at Texas. Anybody following his motorsports picks has seen HUGE returns!

For the 2025 Indianapolis 500, Taranto is high on Josef Newgarden (+1000). He also has a head-to-head prop bet, with a  head-to-head matchup between Christian Lundgaard (+105) over David Malukas (-135). "David Malukas has a lot of upside to his bid in this year's Indy 500, as he is now driving for A.J. Foyt Racing and is back in the 500-mile race one year after a wrist injury sidelined him and led to his unceremonious release from Arrow McLaren," Taranto said. "Malukas was one of the Fast Nine and will start seventh, but his past two Indy 500 finishes – 16th and 29th driving for Dale Coyne – leave much to be desired when it comes to betting on him to finish up front this year.

"That's not to say that Christian Lundgaard has lit the bricks on fire either – he's never had a Top-10 finish in three Indy 500 starts – but he did lead five laps and finish 13th driving for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing last year and now has the full weight of Arrow McLaren behind him. Lundgaard will be starting eighth in the 500, just alongside Malukas in Row Three."

Taranto has also identified four other drivers in his 2025 Indianapolis 500 best bets. He's also high on a huge IndyCar longshot who's going off at nearly 80-1, potentially netting any backer a MASSIVE payday! You ABSOLUTELY NEED to see his picks before locking in any Indianapolis 500 picks of your own.
